US Hacker Gang Charged In Boston
7th August 2008 - A sophisticated US hacker gang has been arrested and indicted in Boston. Eleven members have been charged, including three US citizens and others from China and Eastern Europe.
The gang had hacked into the computer records of a number of retailers and stolen the credit and debit card details of over 40 million customers. Court documents suggest that the total number of cards affected may actually be over 100 million! The majority of these cards relate to customers in America.
With so many customers involved and such a large scale to the theft, it is impossible to estimate the value of thefts and frauds which may have been carried out.
The servers storing the information were located in Ukraine and Latvia.
