Store Theft In The USA Up By 8.8%
November 2009: This site deals with the high-tech and complicated 'dark arts' of identity theft, but it must also be remembered that lots of things are stolen 'the old fashioned way'... A recent report by the
Centre for Retail Research
called the Global Retail Theft Barometer, looks at the impact on retail stores of theft. This includes employee theft, theft in the supply chain and - of course - theft by 'customers', all of which are commonly known as
shrinkage
to accountants. The report, which gained coverage from
CNN
suggests that small, popular (often electrical) are the most popular items to be stolen. These include iPods, laptops, satellite navigation systems and mobile phones. It could be presumed that their small size makes them easier to steal... Other popular items include perfume, tobacco and alcohol products. It suggests that the extra annual costs of these losses will be US$435 per American family. Needless to say, the cost of retail losses is almost always passed on to the consumer somehow. In a global recession, it seems reasonable to presume that more and more families need to turn to small-scale crime to make 'ends meet'. For this reason, the report showed an increase in these types of crime across the 41 countries. Follow these links to go back to:
