More Stolen Data In The UK

There has been more stolen data in the UK reported over the last week or two (14th December 2007).

Unfortunately, these losses have actually been due to theft rather than by accident. This means that we already know the information is in the 'wrong hands' - it is just a question of how wrong those hands happen to be...

The first relates to the theft of a laptop in Belfast, Northern Ireland. The laptop contains details of people who have sought out the help of Citizens Advice Bureau. In total, around 60,000 individuals information is thought to be on the computer.

The second relates to the theft of a different laptop in Cardiff which contained details of patients involved in eye surgery.

In truth, neither of these losses should be a major worry or cause identity thieves to be rubbing their hands with glee. Though, that said, it does not offer any reassurance to the average UK resident about the security of their personal details...
