News Websites

Summary: The news websites and media have very differing approaches to reporting the current trends and happenings in the identity theft and civil liberties worlds. We discuss some of the better sites here...

One of the best online sites that reports about identity theft and many, many IT topics is The Register . They have covered a great many ID fraud stories in the past and the site is updated so often that there is constantly new and unusual news to see. Highly recommended.

In the UK, one daily above the others covers this area more than most. Admittedly, this is largely for political reasons. The Daily Mail delights in pointing out the failings of government - which are very prevalent in the worlds of identity cards, the surveillance society and 'Big Brother'. They may not always be the most objective of stories, but they do cover this area very regularily.

Politics

It hopefully goes without saying that the actions of the political class have an incredible influence on information policy.

An International weekly magazine that discusses information policy on a regular basis is The Economist . This is especially important since the actions of politicians are incredibly important in the real of information sharing and data capture.

Keeping an eye on the American political scene is a specialist weekly newspaper - owned by The Economist Group - called Roll Call . This is a specialist publication that follows the ins and outs of the Washington scene and may be too specialist for many, but informative if you can pass that.

The European political scene is followed by a couple of publications. They are equally specialist but - your author knows from personal experience - they are very reliable in their coverage. The first is another member of The Economist Group, European Voice has a weekly newspaper which is delivered throughout the European institutions and thus is considered to be something of an EU affairs bible.

The other EU affairs specialist is the very yellow EurActiv.com which has an Information Society section. Their 'LinksDossiers' are a very useful resource for all.

The TV News Sites

In our humble opinion, there are two television stations with websites that are head and shoulders above the others. We rate BBC and CNN as being the best of the International crop. Their online and tv news coverage is excellent and we highly recommend them both. We view CNN as being the better international channel, but it does of course have a strong US bias.
