Better In The Red Than Dead? A Life Assurance Fraud Unwravels
On a site such as this, information about different forms of life assurance fraud may not seem to be appropriate. However, the tale of Mr and Mrs Darwin from Hartlepool, England, does appear to involve the use of a false identity.
For those of you that have left the UK and moved to Mars - thus missing this story - the UK media has gone into a frenzy over this couple and their story. It appears that financial problems caused by large debts prompted this crime.
In brief, Mr Darwin died in rough weather at sea whilst in a canoe. The canoe was found, but he was not. Then, as if from nowhere, he walked into a police station and declared that he 'thought he might have been missing'. Meanwhile, his wife had sold the family property and has very recently relocated to Panama City.
Instead of ruining this story for you, if you have missed it, links are posted at the bottom of this page to the BBC website where the story can unfold for you...
It does appear as though Mr Darwin had applied for and been issued with a genuine false passport. In other words, a passport with his picture but in another person's name. He has been able to travel to Panama.
Clearly, this is opposite to much of the contents of this site. Many of the stories here relate to an organised gang exploiting individuals. Instead, this relates to a couple exploiting a company for money. Successful life assurance fraud is quite rare simply because such large companies can commit substantial resources to their own protection.
Is there no person, group or organisation that is safe from identity theft???
