Identity Theft Websites And Online Resources

Summary: There are a number of Identity theft websites - many government owned and operated - that are very useful to anyone trying to prevent or clean up the damage caused by Identity theft. We review some of these sites here...

The world of the online fraudster is difficult for the rest of us to fathom. These guys often have incredible technical skills, vast financial resources and a network of collaborators in multiple countries to help them. In other words, they are very difficult for the average person to keep up with.

We do not pretend that we can assist with every aspect of ID fraud prevention, but between this and other sites, we hope to cover the major areas.

All these sites deserve our full attention.

The United States government has it's own dedicated website for Identity theft which is operated by the FTC . The Federal Trade Commission is responsible for receiving complaints - including ID and credit card fraud - and so is the natural starting point for information for American residents.

Another excellent page with lots of information and links - for North Americans - is this Department of Justice page. Lots of technical information available.

The United Kingdom (government) version of this site is identitytheft.org.uk and should be the natural starting point for information for British residents. Another government operated site in the UK, which is very useful and highly recommended is this identity theft kit . The site is part of the Home Office and so should be both relaible and regularly updated.

Another UK site is the Financial Fraud Action site which is run by the UK Payments Administration. It is a good place to see what is going on - since they are at the forefront of coordinating a defence against frauds involving the banking system.

Back to the United States, and the importance of Social Security Information is explained here in some depth. For many American identity thieves, a social security number is like a key that unlocks the money! Learn how to protect yours.

Not-for-profit information websites.

The following resource page is from PrivacyRights.org and contains an impressive range of links and information to help anyone in most major English speaking countries. Highly recommended.

Needless to say, wikipedia.org has a very full and well research page. Though wikipedia often is attacked for having user generated information rather than expert or journalist researched content, this page looks to be very informative and accurate. Highly recommended.
