Identity Theft Statistics And Where You Live

There are other identity theft statistics that seem to suggest that living in a large or very large city maks you more likely to be a victim of identity theft.

This story from the BBC in October 2006 shows how analysis was carried out across the UK by a referencing agency called Call Credit. It seems as though victims are much more likely to live in London than in other areas of the UK.

There may be an obvious reason for this...

In a place like London, it is far more likely that residents will not know each other or know each other less well.

In a small town, the chances of a local post office or bank manager knowing your family, work mates or friends is much more likely. In other words, big cities provide anonymity. This allows the fraudster to fit in and hide much more easily.

There may be other reasons too. As virtually everyone on earth knows, London is a very expensive city in which to live. If you are living and working in London, the chances are very high that you earn more than the UK average wage. This would mean that you also have a higher potential borrowing capacity than other people. This would be used for bigger thefts and thus higher profits.

Unfortunately, identity theft statistics like these, only go to show just how at risk we potentially all are.
