Tip 2: Buy And Use A Gel Pen
Author Frank W. Abagnale recommends that we all buy and use a gel pen in his book Stealing Your Life. He specifically recommends the Uni-ball 207 gel pen, though in truth, your author can find little obvious difference between this and many other makes and models on the market when it comes to identity theft protection.
If a thief or fraudster is able to obtain a completed cheque - and lets be honest, these are available in all sorts of places - it is possible to wash away the ink!
By covering the signature front and back with Scotch tape and then putting the cheque into a cake pan with a common chemical found in many homes, the ink on the cheque will be removed. The tape protects the signature and thus leaves a criminal with a blank but signed cheque.
By completing the cheque with a gel pen, the pigment ink in the gel actually goes into the paper. This obviously, makes the cheque far more secure.
Whilst this will not specifically protect an individual from identity theft, it will help to prevent cheque fraud which is a fairly common crime. Better yet, these pens are not expensive and will generally cost just a couple of dollars or pounds each.
