British Bankers Seek A Solution To Fake Passports
July 2009: Bankers in the United Kingdom are asking for government assistance in dealing with fake passports. This
story
from the BBC details the problems being faced by UK bank staff. These problems arise less from fake UK passports - for these are ever harder to fake - but from new member states to the European Union and African countries. It ought to be said that many African passports are hardly the travel document of choice, but they can - it seems - be used as banking passports. The mere fact that the British Bankers Association (BBA) is willing to pay for a solution shows just how much money the major banks must be losing to fraud. The banks are worried that fake passports are relatively simple to purchase online and that the more sophisticated fraudsters seem to use fake documents in a way that is almost mass produced! But as we have seen elsewhere on this website, the potential gains from financial frauds are large while the potential for prosecution and punishment seem to be too small.
