Can We Combat Identity Theft?
Is it possible to combat identity theft?
Bearing in mind that the name of this site is combat-identity-theft we would hope that it is possible to avoid and fight. However, it is wise to add that there is no guarantee.
The numbers of problems seem to be rising throughout much of the English speaking world. Yet, the actual numbers of victims are relativey small when compared to the population as a whole. Of course, this does not lessen the impact these crimes have. They just mean that statistically you are unlikely to be targetted.
However, it is possible to lessen the likelyhood of being a target. As you will see on many of the pages of this site, prevention is far more impactful than cure. Once you are targetted, it is probably too late.
To truly combat identity theft, it is important that the individual takes measures to secure their information (generally online) or dispose of their unwanted documents carefully (offline). These two acts, though time consuming and more costly than not doing, will lessen the chances of fraud.
Unfortunately, the reason that these measures work is simple: general ignorance of the subject by the population at large.
If most people were to use strong firewalls and anti-virus software and shred their unwanted but sensitive documents, most fraudsters would choose another line of work. However, most people simply do not do this. This means that should a fraudster come across an individual who does do this, it is simply easier for them to move on to an easier victim.
Admittedly, this only transfers the problem to another unlucky individual. But, if that is what it takes to protect yourself, that is what it takes. We are sorry to paint such a bleak picture, but we feel that it is better to be honest and explain the situation as clearly as possible for you, our reader.
We wish you luck.
