Use Your Credit Report To Help Combat Identity Theft

Our individual credit files are such a major tool that if we plan to combat identity theft, we all really need to understand and monitor them closely.

Whilst it has been the aim of this section to raise awareness of and understanding about credit reports, this can only ever be a theoretical exercise until you have your actual report in your hand to look at. Once you can see the details and some of the confusing jumble of numbers and letters, you will begin to realise how and why confusion reigns and opportunity beckons.

An ID fraudster uses this confusion and apathy to his or her advantage and if we are to combat identity theft, it is of paramount importance that we as individuals take responsibility for checking our financial details.

If you live in the USA, your credit file can be provided for free and details and the link at the bottom of this page will guide you to details. If you live elsewhere, it is a small cost to request details and takes little effort - but it needs to be done!

We urge you to take more care over your finances and check the small details of your reports closely - who knows what you might find! One thing is for sure, a fraudster will check your details very carefully for gaps or opportunities should they be able to get the information, which they often can.

Even if checking your credit reports does not help you to combat identity theft - though it is a great start - it will help you to understand the details that others will see when they search (more and more employers are using credit scoring on their employees these days).

It will also assist with other financial areas - most loans and mortgages need a good or reasonable credit score to apply - which may have a benefit throughout your world. The new car you are hoping to buy, or the extension to your home that you would like will almost certainly depend upon passing a credit score, so we encourage you to take the time to get and then understand yours.
