Important Civil Liberties Websites
Summary: The battles for mass gathering of personal information going on in the western world have identity theft and crime swirling within them. There are a number of civil liberties websites and organisations that are fighting to protect individuals from big governments. We discuss them here... Hopefully it goes without saying that the modern identity theft world is impacted very significantly by civil liberties and human rights. In fact, many argue that the attempts by 'Big Brother' government to gather personal data puts us at more risk rather than less. Therefore, we should all be grateful that there are competing organisations arguing the case for the individual on our behalf. All these groups need our funding and support. One group that looks down on the situation internationally for civil liberties is
Privacy International
. They are a non-profit organisation based in London and receive funding from a number of non-government sources including foundations and other human rights organisations. The
Electronic Privacy Information Centre
are another group in the same world. Instead, they monitor the way in which our emails and online information is handled and stored. In a world of phishing scams, email spam and social networking, they have a vital role to play. In the United States, the
American Civil Liberties Union
performs a vital role in monitoring and campaigning against civil liberties infractions. The UK version of the ACLU is
Liberty
which has been at the forefront of the fight against Identity Cards, amongst other things. The public face of the group is
Dame Shami Chakrabati
who has a very high profile in the UK. She can be seen regularily on TV debates and news broadcasts. As a general rule, she will be trouncing her political opponents with common sense and good judgement. We love her! Another organisation with a strong human rights mandate - as well as being a great supporter of democracy generally - is
Amnesty International
. They have a global network of supporters and can always be found on the front-line protecting others. It would be hard to overestimate the impact they have had on the world over the decades. A quick look at the Amnesty website will highlight the wide number of countries in which they are involved - often in places that we have barely even heard of. Needless to say, it is often these far away countries where human rights are at their lowest and torture and abuse are most used. Please be sure to visit these websites and organisations as they really do need our help.
