Tip 4: Check Your Credit Files

As mentioned in other pages on this site, in the modern world, it is vital to check your credit on a regular basis. By regular, we are suggesting more than once per year.

This may sound a little like overkill or paranoia, but understanding and monitoring your credit files are simply a must.

Since there is more than one agency in each country (for example there are two in the UK and three in the USA), it is possible to request and inspect details from each agency, each year. This will hopefully enable any mistakes or inconsistencies that may be hiding on one file but not the others, to surface.

With the advancing requirements of modern society, many organisations feel that they need to check your credit file before dealings can begin. Many employers investigate current or potential members of staff, landlords look into their tenants and all sorts of companies investigate customers. If so much of day to day life can depend on the results held on a file, it makes sense to fully understand the information held.

Again, depending upon where you are, the costs to see your credit file are either very little of free. for example, if you are based in the USA, you can get free credit information here

There are of course other services available which monitor credit files on a much more regular basis. In fact, for a small monthly fee, there are services which will inform you every time an application is made in your name.

Whilst this may seem a little odd - paying to be informed about your own actions - but if an imposter applies for credit in your name, you will find out just one day later. This means that you may take action straight away, action which might be able to halt the credit process. This would be very valuable and time saving action!
