Canadian Identity Theft Statistics

Luckily for them, Canadian identity theft statistics are lower than for many other countries.

According to the Canadian Anti-fraud Call Centre , called Phonebusters, there were nearly 8,000 identity theft complaints made by the general public in 2006. The losses were estimated at CAN$16,283,000. Not a small amount, we are sure you will agree.

Using their site does not seem to make it possible to compare Canadian numbers against those from other countries since the figures for other nations appear to be implausibly low.

It seems though, that as a crime, it is growing in Canada. For example, there were almost 12,500 complaints in 2005 for a total loss of around $8.6 million. In 2004, there were almost 12,000 complaints for a loss of $19 million.

Obviously, these figures do not show linear growth, which is probably a good thing. These Canadian identity theft statistics do show, however, that it is a problem and crime of note which is impacting tens of thousands of lives.
