130 Million American Credit Cards At Risk
August 2009: When reading the following story, it would seem that a relevant question to ask is 'Why do people use credit cards?'.
This story
shows just how 'at risk' credit card details really are. One man, it seems, had been able to download the details of 130 million American credit cards by hacking into the secure payment database of a chain of stores. It seems that the plan was to sell this stolen information to fraudsters for identity theft. The potential losses if several gangs had bought and 'worked' this list could be in the billions (with a b) of dollars. The scale of the problem would have been staggering. In addition, you have to wonder just how much a list of 130 million names can be sold for! Whatever happened, there would have been a lot of money involved. As it is, identity theft is a massive problem in the United States, this would simply have made it much much worse. If you would like to read about the case, please use the BBC link above.
