More Government Information Goes Missing - NHS Trusts Data Loss
22nd December 2007 - There has been a government announcement of NHS Trusts data loss in various parts of the UK.
What can we say? Another day in Britain, another breach of public trust by an information hungry government. This loss, whilst small compared to some recent announcements, is another grim reminder of the extent to which our personal information is at risk in the modern world.
As more and more of these announcements are made, it becomes ever harder to remain silent on this issue. There are several questions that spring to mind here - one of the main ones being, "When will government take this seriously?"
Perhaps they already do take this seriously. Yet, one would imagine that by now a Minister should have resigned if that were really the case.
Another equally good question is, "When will the public take this seriously?" Such large scale incompetence should be punished and yet the British general public quietly tut-tuts from the living room and no changes are made.
At the rate we are going, identity criminals and fraudsters will know more about us than anyone else.
Shall we look at a hypothetical person...
He or she has children - the DSS has lost their details, possibly including bank details and social security number
He has recently sat a driving test - that information was sent to America to be lost
His child has received medical care in Hackney - that might be lost too
Perhaps it would make the whole process much simpler if when a government form was completed, it is just posted online the next day as part of a massive cross referencing data base to make things easy to find ... there would never be another 'loss' again!
